Steps to install SSL Certificate on Microsoft IIS 8

Install SSL on Microsoft IIS 81. Download SSL Certificate Files

After completing the validation process, the Certificate Authority will issue you out your SSL Certificate to the technical contact’s email. Within that email contains your Primary Certificate, Intermediate Certificate, and Root Certificate. You’ll have to either copy all this into a text file and upload it to your server or be able to access your email while on the server.

2. Add the Certificate Snap-in into Microsoft Management Console (MMC)

  • Use Windows + R shortcut key or open Start menu
  • Type MMC and hit the Enter button
  • From File menu, select Add/Remove Snap-in
  • Now click on Add button
  • From the list of Snap-in, click on Certificates and press Add
    • If Windows ask you to choose a user, select a specific Computer Account and click OK button.
  • Close the Standalone Snap-in dialogue box.
  • Now Certificate Snap-in is in your MMC.

3. Import Intermediate SSL Certificate

  • Expand Certificates,
  • Right click on Intermediate Certification Authorities
  • You’ll have to first click on Add Tasks and then click on Import
  • In the Certificate Import Wizard, Press Next button
  • Once on the next screen click on Browse, find your Intermediate Certificate File and click on Open.
  • Click the Next button to proceed
  • Your Certificate information will be displayed on your screen, verify it and click on Finish.
  • The Import was successful alert will popup.

Note: Root certificate files have already been installed in windows. If the root certificate files are missing please perform the step-4.

4. Import Root SSL Certificate (Optional step)

  • Expand Certificates,
  • Right click on Third-Party Root Certification Authorities
  • You’ll want to first click on Add Tasks and then click on Import
  • In the Certificate Import Wizard, Press Next button
  • Once on the next screen click on Browse, find your intermediate certificate file and click on Open.
  • Click the Next button to proceed
  • Your Certificate information will be displayed on your screen, verify it and click on Finish.
  • The Import was successful alert will popup.

5. SSL certificate Installation on Microsoft IIS 8

  • Open the IIS 8 Server Manager, from Tools open the (IIS) Internet Information Services Manager
  • From the Connections panel located on the left, click on Server Name.
  • Now in the center panel, double click on Server Certificate.
  • In the Action panel on the right corner, click on Complete Certificate Request…
  • A new Complete Certificate Request dialogue will appear.
  • In that dialogue, you’ll have to browse to your SSL certificate file and add a Friendly Name.
  • In Certificate Store option, select Personal & click OK
  • In the Connection panel located in the left corner, click on the Server Name for which you’ve installed the Certificate.
  • Now expand Sites folder
  • Click on the Site Name that you’re wishing to secure with the SSL certificate you installed.
  • In the Action panel, hit the Bindings
  • Click Add and then add details given below.
    1. Type: Select HTTPS
    2. IP Address: Select All Unassigned
    3. Port: Enter 443
    4. SSL Certificate: Select the SSL which you have recently installed
  • Click on OK then Close.
  • Restart Microsoft IIS 8

As soon as your server comes back online, your server will now begin securing web traffic for your domain.
