The algorithm or cipher is known as a private key \u2014 something that needs to be kept secret in most cases (with the exception of public key) to protect its viability and security.<\/p>\n<h3>Security Claim vs Security Level When It Comes to 128 vs 256 bit Certificates<\/h3>\n<p>256 bit SSL encryption means a technique of public key infrastructure (PKI) that uses a 256 bit long key to encrypt and decrypt the data that is transmitted between the client and the server.\u00a0On the other hand, 128 bit encryption SSL security refers to an encryption key strength of 128 bit key.<\/p>\n<p>So, this means that when a company tries to sell you a \u201c256-bit SSL certificate,\u201d what that translates into is that they\u2019re selling you a certificate that has a key with the<em> capability of facilitating encrypted connections up to 256 bits<\/em>. It\u2019s a <em>security claim<\/em> \u2014 what the algorithm or hash (known as a cryptographic primitive) was designed to achieve \u2014 versus the actual <em>security level<\/em> of the encryption \u2014 what the cryptographic primitive actually offers. This is a very important distinction.<\/p>\n<p>128 bit SSL protection is secure till today but it won\u2019t be like that forever. Hence, diverting our encryption to 256 bit encryption for a more secure future.<\/p>\n<h2>So\u2026 Just How Strong is 256-Bit Encryption, Really?<\/h2>\n<p>The answer to this question isn\u2019t clear-cut and differs depending on the context \u2014 it could be referring to encryption strength level or it could be referring to key size. Furthermore, the answer also depends on which type of encryption algorithm you\u2019re using \u2014 asymmetric vs symmetric.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Symmetric encryption relies on a shared private key that\u2019s kept secret by the two parties in the transaction and is used to both encrypt and decrypt the information.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cheapsslsecurity.com\/blog\/what-is-asymmetric-encryption-understand-with-simple-examples\/\">Asymmetric encryption<\/a>, on the other hand, involves the use of a public key and is kind of a form of one-way encryption. One party possess a public key (for encryption) and the other a private key (for decryption).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Requiring significantly more computation to perform, asymmetric encryption is also used frequently as a mechanism for exchanging symmetric keys (which require less computational overhead). So, essentially, asymmetric encryption is primarily used for key exchange. It creates a secure channel to exchange the symmetric key.<\/p>\n<h2>What \u201cBits\u201d Are in Terms of Encryption<\/h2>\n<p>We keep talking about bits\u2026 but what does that really mean?<\/p>\n<p>When referring to 256-bit encryption in the context of SSL\/TLS, though, it usually is talking about Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), a type of block cipher encryption. With AES, 256 bits really does mean 256 bits, which is very strong. This means that there are <strong>115,792,089,237,316,195,423,<br \/>\n570,985,008,687,907,853,269,984,665,<br \/>\n640,564,039,457,584,007,913,129,639,936<\/strong> possible combinations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s a lot of numbers. Even if it didn\u2019t take the hacker trying every individual combination to hit the jackpot and break the encryption, it still would take many, many years to do so. This type of exercise would extend far beyond a single human\u2019s lifespan \u2014 as well as those of their kids, grandkids, great grandkids, etc. down through your family\u2019s line of descendants \u2014 without the help of something like quantum computing.
