While Chrome and Opera tend to operate on the same plane, Safari, Firefox and Microsoft Edge all do their own thing. Case in point, let\u2019s consider the error code SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER in Firefox.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The error code SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER also appears as \u201cNET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID\u201d in Chrome and \u201cDLG_FLAGS_INVALID_CA&#8221; in Edge. What\u2019s more complicated is that this message can mean two things for Firefox and Edge users, whereas Chrome has dedicated error messages for each of the two variations. We\u2019ll get into that in just a second.<\/p>\n<h2>What Does SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER Mean?<\/h2>\n<p>The error code SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER is meant to tell users that a website is attempting to use an SSL certificate that was issued by an untrusted entity. The way public key infrastructure (PKI) works \u2014 and in order for it to function correctly \u2014 only trusted <a href=\"https:\/\/cheapsslsecurity.com\/blog\/what-is-a-certificate-authority-ca\/\">certificate authorities<\/a> (CAs) can <a href=\"https:\/\/cheapsslsecurity.com\/blog\/understanding-the-role-of-certificate-authorities-in-pki\/\">issue trusted certificates<\/a>. There\u2019s a very strict set of guidelines that CAs follow to ensure that they\u2019re both performing their due diligence concerning validation and that they\u2019re acting in good faith when they issue certificates. The error code <a href=\"https:\/\/support.mozilla.org\/en-US\/questions\/1238264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER in Firefox<\/a> refers to one of two possible scenarios:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The certificate was issued by an untrusted CA; or<\/li>\n<li>Somehow, the issuing CA\u2019s root was deleted from the root store.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s almost always the former. Specifically, it\u2019s usually a Symantec Legacy certificate at fault. Symantec was completely distrusted last Fall. All of its remaining digital certificates <a href=\"https:\/\/cheapsslsecurity.com\/blog\/a-quick-guide-to-replace-reissue-existing-symantec-ssl-tls-certificates\/\">needed to be reissued by DigiCert<\/a> \u2014 who took over Symantec\u2019s CA operations following its acquisition. Otherwise, they would be distrusted by the browsers, too.<\/p>\n<p>Firefox uses the SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER warning to refer to any issuance by an untrusted CA. Other browsers, like Chrome, have specific messages for Symantec Legacy and other untrusted CA issuances. But to make things even more confusing, the CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID error message that Chrome gives untrusted CAs (not named Symantec) is the same one it uses for self-signed certificate errors, whereas Firefox has a dedicated error message for self-signed.<\/p>\n<p>Feeling confused yet?<\/p>\n<p>Just remember that we\u2019re focusing on Firefox right now. DO NOT click through the warning. That\u2019s a bad habit to get into and it rewards bad security. Instead, notify the site owner and, if it isn\u2019t fixed quickly, maybe think of taking your business elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>The other possibility, and this is much more remote \u2014 unless you\u2019ve been messing around with your settings \u2014 is that the relevant root CA certificate got deleted from your root store. If this is the case, just wipe your settings and then delete and reinstall Firefox. That\u2019s the quickest way to fix the issue. We know, it\u2019s not the error code SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER fix you were necessarily hoping for. However, just remember that if you\u2019re still getting there error afterwards, it\u2019s them \u2014 not you.<\/p>\n<h2>Fixing SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER for Site Owners<\/h2>\n<p>Regardless of whether you\u2019re getting this error because of a legacy Symantec certificate or just because your certificate\u2019s CA isn\u2019t trusted by Firefox, you really only have one choice: You need to get another certificate.<\/p>\n<p>There are dozens of trusted CAs at various price points that can issue you a <a href=\"https:\/\/cheapsslsecurity.com\/blog\/ssl-certificates-from-trusted-root-certificate-authorities\/\">universally trusted SSL certificate<\/a>.
