Or how an email you send from Florida is delivered to Tokyo in a matter of seconds? The magic behind it is the TCP\/IP model. Discover everything you need to know about the backbone of the internet and communication transfer. Get ready to network!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Network protocols like TCP aren\u2019t only relevant to IT networking professionals; they\u2019re everywhere in the digital world and are the foundation of modern communication. Without them, there would be no internet and we would all be back to the 1970s analog world. This means no more online games, streaming, Facebook, video calls, and chats with your family and friends \u2014 practically a dystopian nightmare for many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with these great experiences and opportunities come big risks: <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.cloudflare.com\/ddos-attack-trends-for-2021-q4\/\">TCP-based DDOS<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/home.html\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.cloudflare.com\/ddos-attack-trends-for-2021-q4\/\"><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/\">attacks<\/a>, the growing number of detected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/\">new attack vectors<\/a>, and a litany of other common network issues. This is the reason why understanding what\u2019s going on behind the scenes of a network protocol can help users and IT specialists alike be prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far, you\u2019ve learned the basics of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cheapsslsecurity.com\/blog\/what-is-the-udp-protocol-a-user-datagram-protocol-definition\/\">UDP protocol<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cheapsslsecurity.com\/blog\/how-udp-works-a-look-at-the-user-datagram-protocol-in-computer-networks\/\">how UDP works<\/a>. Now it&#8217;s time to have a look at TCP, another widely used network protocol. We\u2019ll explore the TCP\/IP model, discover its different components, and learn how it relates to OSI (yes, we\u2019ll tell you more about that too).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TCP\/IP: What Is the TCP IP Model?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Computers and the internet have completely transformed the way we communicate. But just like humans, to be able to interact and exchange information successfully, computers need a common way to communicate. Most of the time, they do that through the transmission control protocol and the internet protocol model (TCP\/IP). TCP\/IP is basically a set of globally standardized rules that enable devices to communicate across networks. No matter which brand they are, where they&#8217;re located, and what operating system or software they use, TCP\/IP works, always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you ever tried buying something in a physical shop, in a foreign country, without speaking the language? I did, and let me tell you, it was an interesting experience. As my knowledge of Japanese was limited to \u201csushi,\u201d \u201carigato\u201d and \u201csumo,\u201d I tried hand gestures, but it only caused puzzled looks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To cut the story short, the magic happened when the shop assistant found a colleague who could speak a bit of English (the only one available that day apparently). That day, I not only got a new, shiny, smartwatch, but I also realized how important it is to have a common way to communicate clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TCP vs. IP: Two Protocols Working Together as One<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must have noticed that the two protocols TCP and IP have always been mentioned together. Why? Because even if they\u2019re two separate communication protocols, they work together toward a common goal, operating on different TCP\/IP stack layers. (We\u2019ll speak more about TCP IP layers a little later.) Like the Japanese writer Rynosuke Satoro said, &#8220;<a><\/a>Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TCP is responsible for transporting and delivering the data to the destination application or device defined by the IP. While IP is the part obtaining the address to which the data is sent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a bit like when you send a birthday card to your grandmother: the address you write on the envelope is the IP, while the process and the technology that make sure the letter is delivered to the correct address is TCP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you send an email, browse the internet, or watch your favorite movies, the TCP\/IP model makes all of it possible. How? It all starts with a handshake \u2014 much like how you shake hands when you meet a new colleague at work or greet a person you know in the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TCP and the Three-Way Handshake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before transmitting packets, TCP must ensure that a stable connection has been set up between the sender and the recipient. This is where the three-way handshake (or SYN-SYN-ACK) comes in. Much like how you\u2019d traditionally shake hands when meeting a new colleague at work or greeting someone you know on the street, there needs to be a similar exchange of messages and acknowledgments that takes place between the two parties in a TCP connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The TCP three-way handshake works as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>The client sends a SYN packet to the server asking him to open a connection.<\/li><li>The server responds by sending a SYN-ACK, acknowledging receipt of the SYN packet, and confirming that it&#8217;s ready to connect.<\/li><li>The client responds with ACK to validate the connection and the transmission of packets starts.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Easy \u2014 like shooting fish in a barrel!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/cheapsslsecurity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/tcp-3-way-handshake-1024x392.png\" alt=\"A basic illustration that demonstrates the TCP\/IP three-way handshake and the back-and-forth communications between a client and server\" class=\"wp-image-7438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cheapsslsecurity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/tcp-3-way-handshake-1024x392.png 1024w, https:\/\/cheapsslsecurity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/tcp-3-way-handshake-300x115.png 300w, https:\/\/cheapsslsecurity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/tcp-3-way-handshake.png 1192w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption> A basic overview of the <em>TCP three-way handshake process<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the handshake done and dusted, we can now go deeper and explore the architecture behind the TCP\/IP model (i.e., the TCP\/IP model layers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breaking Down the TCP\/IP Model<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After completing your last big project, you want to take a few days off from work. You open your mail account, write your request to your boss, click on send and keep your fingers crossed for a positive reply. And abracadabra! Your message is suddenly transmitting from your email account to your bosses where, hopefully, they\u2019ll quickly approve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what happens between the time you hit \u201csend\u201d and when it arrives in his inbox?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The TCP\/IP model splits the email into small packets<\/strong>. As this protocol puts a lot of emphasis on accuracy, the message is broken down into packets. This way, if something happens during the transmission (e.g., a packet is lost), the system will just have to re-send the lost packet, not the whole message. You don\u2019t want to end up with your boss receiving only an empty email, right?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The packets go through four layers<\/strong>. Each layer has a different function. The layers define the standards for data exchange and how your email is going to be handled when transmitted.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The data are received by the recipient<\/strong>. To reassemble the message, the packets go through the same four layers in reverse. In the digital world of virtually instant network communications, the layers collaborate to transmit the data from one layer to another in rapid succession. It\u2019s what you, as a user, see and interact with when sending and receiving data. It\u2019s also what generates the data and requests the connection. The application layer would be your email system in the previous example of requesting time off from work. Some of the most important protocols used in this layer are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/\"><strong>Simple mail transfer protocol<\/strong><\/a><strong> (SMTP)<\/strong>. Used to send emails. This is the protocol you used when you sent the email to your boss.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/\"><strong>Hypertext transfer protocol\/secure<\/strong><\/a><strong> (HTTP\/HTTPS)<\/strong>. Both used to access the web. HTTPS (the more secure version of HTTP thanks to encryption) is the protocol you\u2019re using to read this article. They\u2019re the protocols that you use every time you browse the internet.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/previous-versions\/windows\/it-pro\/windows-server-2012-r2-and-2012\/ff687787(v=ws.11)\"><strong>File transfer protocol<\/strong><\/a><strong> (FTP)<\/strong>. Used to transmit files from one system to another. That\u2019s what you would use to upload content if you would have your own website.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/home.html\"><strong>Secure shell <\/strong><\/a><strong>(SSH)<\/strong>. Similar to Telnet. The transport layer splits the data into smaller packets and numbers them in sequence. It determines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The amount of data to be sent,<\/li><li>The data\u2019s destination, and<\/li><li>The data transmission rate (flow control).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also obtains the acknowledgment that the recipient has received the packets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protocols used in this layer are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cheapsslsecurity.com\/blog\/how-udp-works-a-look-at-the-user-datagram-protocol-in-computer-networks\/\">User datagram protocol (UDP)<\/a><\/strong>. Used to provide connectionless service and end-to-end delivery of transmission. It identifies transmission errors without specifying them.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Transmission control protocol (TCP)<\/strong>. Used to ensure reliable transmission of packets. It\u2019s a bit like the road traffic controller as it directs the flow and speed of traffic. It also provides the functions and procedural methods for the data sequences transfer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protocols belonging to this layer are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Internet protocol versions 4 and 6 (IPv4\/IPv6)<\/strong>. Used for routing the data across the network. It&#8217;s responsible for packets delivery from the host source to the destination host by looking at the IP addresses in the packet.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudflare.com\/en-gb\/learning\/ddos\/glossary\/internet-control-message-protocol-icmp\/\"><strong>Internet control message protocol<\/strong><\/a><strong> (ICMP)<\/strong>. Used to provide information to the hosts in case of network problems.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.cloudflare.com\/ddos-attack-trends-for-2021-q4\/\"><strong>Address resolution protocol<\/strong><\/a><strong> (ARP)<\/strong>. It corresponds to the data link layer and physical layer of the open systems interconnection (OSI) model (we\u2019ll talk more about it in a bit). It:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Adds the destination <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akamai.com\/blog\/security\/tcp-middlebox-reflection\">MAC address<\/a> to data frames, and<\/li><li>transmits data between applications or devices over the network.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also handles the physical infrastructure enabling communication between devices over the internet. This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ethernet cables,<\/li><li>wireless networks,<\/li><li>network interface cards,<\/li><li>drivers, and more.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know it\u2019s a lot to take in. But let&#8217;s see if the graphic below summarizing the layers and their functions can help you out. But what&#8217;s the OSI model? And how is it related to the TCP\/IP model? You\u2019ll find the answers to these questions in the next chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TCP Model vs OSI Model \u2014 Concise vs Verbose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you remember when talked about the importance of a common way to communicate? The open systems interconnection model was developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) to address this need. Its goal? Ensure compatibility between electronic communication systems at a global level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the TCP\/IP model was an implementation model designed to maintain and explain the transmission of data, OSI was more a kind of reference model. It\u2019s a concept that illustrates the functions of the communication system and its procedures. So while both the TCP\/IP and OSI models are both about computer networking at their ore, there are some fundamental differences between the two models:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><\/td><td><strong>Transmission Control Protocol Model (TCP)<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Open Systems Interconnection Model (OSI)<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Model Type<\/strong><\/td><td>Implementation model. Internet is implemented around it.<\/td><td>Reference model.
