Generally, WLCs are deployed in networks having high light-weight access points present in large quantities. This is great as it facilitates encryption between access points. However, it comes with a pitfall\u2014a major one. The SSL certificate underlying Cisco WLC is a self-signed certificate. As a result, all the users who are connected to the wireless network get a pesky warning. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To make this warning disappear, you need to install a 3<sup>rd<\/sup> party SSL certificate on your WLC.<\/p>\n<p>So, let\u2019s see how you can install a 3<sup>rd<\/sup> party SSL certificate on Cisco Wireless LAN Controller (WLC).<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: CSR Generation<\/h3>\n<p>The first part of any SSL installation process begins with CSR generation, and Cisco WLC is no different. Follow the steps below to generate a CSR for Cisco WLC. Skip this part and jump to the installation if you\u2019ve already generated the CSR.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>This CSR generation process has been done using OpenSSL. You can generate the CSR using WLC too, but it doesn\u2019t allow you to add subject alternative names (SANs). That is why we haven\u2019t included this option.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>First, download and install the OpenSSL application from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openssl.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/www.openssl.org\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Now, you\u2019ll have to enter the command below:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<pre>OpenSSL req \u2013new -newkey rsa:2048 -nodes -keyout mykey.key \u2013out myreq.csr<\/pre>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Now enter the requested information as described below.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Country Name<\/strong>: 2-digit country code<\/li>\n<li><strong>State\/Province<\/strong>: Write the full name of the state. For example, Florida.<\/li>\n<li><strong>City<\/strong>: Write the full name of the city. For example, New York<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organization Name<\/strong>: Write the full name of your organization without any special characters. If you want to issue an OV or an EV SSL certificate, you must write the legal name of your organization.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organization Unit<\/strong>: Name of the department (e.g., Marketing Department)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Common Name<\/strong>: Mention the domain name that you specified on virtual interface of WLC (e.g., yourdomainname.com.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Email<\/strong>: The email ID through which certification will take place<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Enter a password of your choice<\/li>\n<li>Now you have two files \u2013 CSR and Private Key. It will be stored in the OpenSSL bin folder. Their names would look like \u2018<strong>pem<\/strong>\u2019 and \u2018<strong>myreq.pem<\/strong>.\u2019 The <strong>myreq.pem<\/strong> file is the CSR, and it will be used to issue your certificate.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Step 2: Certificate Download<\/h3>\n<p>Download the certificate files from your account. Skip this if you already have the files at your disposal.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 3: Certificate Chaining<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Now, you\u2019ll have three certificate files \u2013 device certificate, intermediate certificate, and root certificate. Copy and paste the contents of each certificate in a text editor such as Notepad. Every certificate you copy, and paste must be starting from <strong>&#8212;&#8211;BEGIN CERTIFICATE&#8212;&#8211;<\/strong> and ending at <strong>&#8212;&#8211;END CERTIFICATE&#8212;&#8211;.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The all certificate file should be in the following order:<\/p>\n<p>1) Device certificate<\/p>\n<p>2) Intermediate certificate<\/p>\n<p>3) Root certificate<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Save the file as \u2018<strong>Allcerts<\/strong>\u2019 with the .pem extension.<\/li>\n<li>Move the <strong>pem <\/strong>file and <strong>Allcerts.pem<\/strong> file in the bin folder of OpenSSL in Program Files.<\/li>\n<li>Once again, open OpenSSL.
